THE SOMERSET PLANTATION WEB SITE
Somerset Place is a restored plantation on the banks of
Lake Phelps in rural Washington County. It was built in
1780, and many of its structures have been rebuilt or
refurbished, including the main plantation house and some
support buildings like the kitchen and smoke houses. It
is now managed by Dorothy Spruill Redford, a descendant
of one of the enslaved people who lived at Somerset. She
has also written a book about her search for her
ancestors, entitled "Somerset Homecoming"
highly recommended reading.
